A Viagra-like erectile dysfunction (ED) pill could help men develop new erections as early as two years after they began.
The study, published in the journalNeurology, is expected to be the first of its kind, but it’s one that was previously out of favour in New Zealand.
Researchers tested a pill that works by blocking phosphodiesterase type 5, a key enzyme that regulates blood flow.
Dr Graham Jackson, a Pfizer scientist and an expert on erectile dysfunction, said the drug works by inhibiting PDE5, which regulates blood flow in the penis.
“We found that when applied to the penis, sildenafil citrate improved erection hardness and improved erectile function in up to 50 per cent of men,” Jackson said.
“Our results showed that the drug was able to improve erection hardness and improved erection function in up to 70 per cent of men.
“This is the first of its kind, and we hope it will become the first to show how sildenafil works.”
Researchers also tested the drug in more than 500 men.
Those men who took the drug had longer-lasting erections than those who did not.
Those men had a significantly better sex life, but the researchers found no significant differences between the men who used the drug and those who did not.
“These data are very encouraging,” Jackson said.
The drug can help men who have difficulty getting or keeping an erection, but it won’t cure the condition.
It can also help people who suffer from impotence, and it may be used in men who have low blood flow issues.
Those men can take the drug for up to five years to get the maximum effect.
The study, which involved 12,600 men, involved about half of them taking sildenafil.
Dr Tom Murtagh, who was lead author on the study, said: “We were not able to test the effects of the drug on erection hardness and function in men who had trouble getting or keeping an erection.”
“However, we think the benefits of sildenafil in men with erectile dysfunction could be significant,” he said.
“We expect that our study will provide a new direction on how to improve the treatment for erectile dysfunction in men, and we hope it will become the first of its kind.”
A drug that works in the body by increasing blood flow to the penis may help some men who have problems with getting an erection.
Some men with impotence can use sildenafil to treat that condition, Jackson said.
A clinical study showed the drug can help men who have difficulty getting or keeping an erection.
The study involved nearly 300 men who had been taking sildenafil for six months, to see if it improved their sex lives.
Those men had at least one condition that might be causing impotence, such as low blood pressure or chest pain.
Those men who took the drug had erectile dysfunction that was severe enough that they needed to get or keep an erection. They also had problems with getting an erection and keeping it long enough to have sex.
The study involved about half of the men who were taking sildenafil.
Those men who took the drug had longer-lasting erections than those who took the placebo.
Dr Murtagh said there was also a possibility that the drug could cause side effects such as headaches and dizziness.
Those side effects were uncommon.
Dr Murtagh said those rare side effects were usually mild and short-lived.
“Although most people who took sildenafil reported mild side effects, these were more common than the general population,” he said.
“Although most side effects were usually mild, some men who take sildenafil have reported having headaches and dizziness,” Jackson said.
